Robyn's story

Wednesday, December 23, 2009

Dear Friend,

When our daughter Robyn was born with a disability, we knew she would face obstacles throughout her life.  In school, Robyn was shy and sometimes found it difficult to socialize with her peers.  Often, she did not speak.  Looking to the future, we feared Robyn would not have the opportunity to experience some of the common joys of life that we so often take for granted – having a fulfilling job, making new friends and leading a happy, productive life.  However, we raised Robyn to believe in herself and work hard to overcome challenges.

Robyn at workAs Robyn neared adulthood, our hope was that she could be gainfully employed, have real friendships and enjoy the independence that comes from having a job.

After high school, Robyn came to Melwood, where she went to work as a custodian at a federal building in downtown Washington, DC.  In two years, Robyn has matured tremendously.  Since she began working, Robyn has developed a solid work ethic and genuine friendships.  Robyn is now much more outgoing and talks to people more than ever before.  She enjoys the responsibility that comes with a job, and takes pride in doing her job well.  Robyn performs so well she even earned "Employee of the Month" honors!

Rather than draw government benefits, Robyn earns a living, saves for retirement, pays taxes and has exceeded our hope that she have a regular job of which she could be proud.  She is a productive member of society, contributing her part to making our world a little better.  We could not be more proud of all that she has accomplished.

Melwood gave Robyn the opportunity and encouragement to achieve her goals. We are grateful to Melwood for enriching her life and enriching my family's lives.

In these times, your support is essential.  Budget cuts have affected Melwood's ability to offer ongoing help that enables thousands of people like Robyn reach their fullest potential.  Your generous support is the perfect holiday gift to make a world of difference to those people and their families.

Please support Melwood today and give the gift of opportunity to more people with disabilities.

Thank you,

Sandra and Robert Grantley
