The Melwood Unified Teams are open to riders of ALL ability levels who want to expand their horsemanship and riding knowledge, be a part of a fun and supportive team environment, and explore other riding disciplines!   Whether your interest is in trail riding, competing at horse shows, or gaining more knowledge on how to care for a horse, these teams provide a great opportunity for you to have an awesome collaborative team experience in an equine-centered setting!


Winter Trail Team

Feb 27 - Mar 26, 2016

 

Be a part of a team trail riding experience, in a fun, safe, and supportive environment!

Each rider will have the opportunity to both ride AND crew (assist with the horse’s care and conditioning). This team season includes 5 weeks of Saturday practices PLUS enrollment in the Winter Session 2 Lessons (1 general horsemanship or therapeutic riding lesson per week).

The season will end with a trail ride weekend event on Saturday, April 3 and Sunday, April 4.

Riders in this program will: be a part of a team; learn trail ride safety and etiquette; learn how to condition and care for a competitive trail horse; receive a team t-shirt; have the option of spending the night during the event weekend; become more comfortable riding in the woods, through fields, and over obstacles.

This team is appropriate for riders ages 8 and older of all ability levels.

Cost: $570

Cost for riders trailering in: $420 (Note: Horse is not boarded at or free-leased to Melwood)


Spring Cross-Training Team

Apr 23 - May 21, 2016

 

Be a part of a team with other riders interested in learning about different equestrian disciplines and activities. 

Cross-training team season includes 5 weeks of Saturday trainings PLUS enrollment in the Spring Session Lessons (1 general horsemanship or therapeutic riding lesson per week).  

The season will end with an event weekend on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. 

Riders in this program will: be a part of a team; explore a different equestrian discipline during each training week at Melwood and at other local farms with both mounted and unmounted activities that may include foxhunting, racing, driving, sidesaddle, etc.; learn how to condition and care for different types of competitive equine athletes; learn about the training, attire, equipment, and environments needed for different disciplines, receive a team polo shirt; and have the option of spending the night during the event weekend.

This team is appropriate for Melwood Recreation Center Equestrian Program riders at the Thoroughbred and Friesan levels, ages 13 and older who can participate successfully in a ratio of 5 riders to one instructor.

Winter Show Team

Jan 14 - Feb 11, 2017

 

Prepare and compete in a horse show, while being a part of a team in a fun, safe, and supportive environment!

Each rider will have the opportunity to both ride AND assist with the horse’s care and conditioning. This team season includes 5 weeks of Saturday practices PLUS enrollment in the Winter Session 1 Lessons (1 general horsemanship or therapeutic riding lesson per week).

The season will end with a horse show weekend event on Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19.

Riders in this program will: be a part of a team; learn show ring safety and etiquette; learn how to condition, groom, and care for a horse going to a show; receive a team polo shirt; have the option of spending the night during the event weekend; become more comfortable and confident riding in front of others, including a judge; and learn to evaluate themselves and other riders’ skills. This team is appropriate for riders ages 8 and older of all ability levels.

Cost: $570

Spring Trail Team

Apr 22 - May 20, 2017

 

All participants will:

  • Be a part of a team

  • Participate in field trips

  • Learn trail ride safety and etiquette

  • Learn how to condition and care for a competitive trail horse

  • Receive a team t-shirt

  • Support their team

  • Go on an overnight camping trip

  • Become more comfortable riding in the woods, through fields, and over obstacles

  • Represent Melwood

  • Train twice a week—once on trail and once in the arena

Outside Riders Providing Their Own Horse and Transportation: $411


Fall Trail Team

Oct 14 - Nov 11, 2017

Riders in this program will: be a part of a team; learn trail ride safety and etiquette; learn how to condition and care for a competitive trail horse; receive a team t-shirt; have the option of spending the night during the event weekend; become more comfortable riding in the woods, through fields, and over obstacles.

This team is appropriate for riders ages 8 and older of all ability levels.

Horsemanship Team

Dec 2 - Dec 16, 2017

 

Be a part of a team of other equine enthusiasts interested in learning about barn management and horse care.

Horsemanship team season includes 3 weeks of Saturday unmounted seminars held at Melwood and at other local facilities in both indoor and outdoor environments. Participants in this program will: be a part of a team; gain valuable horsemanship skills through unmounted activities and lectures from staff and guest speakers; and receive a team polo shirt.

This team is appropriate for Melwood Recreation Center Equestrian Program riders ages 10 and older AND volunteers. All activities are unmounted. Participants should be able to participate successfully in a ratio of 8 participants to one group leader and must be able to independently lead, groom, and tack a horse.
