Operation: Tohidu for Women

A holistic retreat helping our women warriors overcome obstacles to their recovery and supporting their successful reintegration.

A holistic retreat helping our women warriors overcome obstacles to their recovery and supporting their successful reintegration.

One out of five women veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Today there are over two million women veterans in the U.S. Many are still dealing with the effects of PTSD, military sexual assault or trauma. These valiant warriors struggle to recover not only their health, but also their civilian lives finding jobs, rebuilding family relationships, and figuring out their new place in our communities. Their path is far from easy and many need our support. Melwood's Operation: Tohidu program for Women is a series of retreats designed for wounded veterans and active duty military to help them overcome obstacles to their recovery and support their successful reintegration into their homes and communities.

“Tohidu” is a Cherokee word meaning peace of mind, body, and spirit. Operation: Tohidu's experiential rehabilitation program focuses on confidence-building, outdoor activities, and group discussion in a relaxed, positive environment using proven techniques for the self-management of symptoms, stressors, and responses. Guided by a Board-Certified Psychologist with Military and Programming Experience, our veteran mentors and highly trained staff of certified recreational support professionals strategically implement activities that highlight individual abilities, leading to an overall improvement in quality of life. By many accounts, it is one of the most intensive programs for veterans and active duty personnel with PTSD that is currently available in the eastern United States.

Testimonials

…my background was in the military and my biggest issue with PTS is in relationship to military sexual trauma. As a young person that joined the military, I swore to defend my nation against the enemies that are foreign and domestic, not knowing that those domestic enemies were going to be somebody in your training class.

Operation: Tohidu is a place where you come to regain peace of mind to where maybe you won't have your mind racing 24/7 like you're constantly in danger.

I had become extremely isolated and really apprehensive about trying to interact with other individuals. I'm back now for the women's program with a stronger emphasis on how we, as women, have to continue to deal with military sexual trauma. I’m willing to share with the other women the experiences that I’ve had [at Operation: Tohidu]...that you are going to take out of this as much as you're willing to grasp.

…I was afraid of the judgment and the lack of understanding that I had received while [serving]. Once I got here, even the first night, it was apparent that that was not it. It was a completely different program. Different people. All these women understand what I went through and sympathize with me, and I've touched people that I didn't even think my story would even come close to their experiences. And that, in itself, was very comforting and humbling at the same time.
